Raise a glass with Andy Cronshaw - March 2018

Manchester Evening News

Andy Cronshaw

To mark Mother's Day and International Women's Day Andy Cronshaw from the Manchester Evening New's picked a "selection of high quality wines made by or under the supervision of women."

Cronshaw picked out Champagne Castelnau's Brut Reserve NV for the work of Elisabeth Sarcelet. He notes that although a woman making wine "might not necessarily seem to be worthy of note but in an environment once almost entirely dominated by men there is a balance yet to be struck."

However, this imbalance is no where to be found in the champagne itself, Cronshaw finds "elegance," "complexity," and a "long finish."

"I was struck immediately by the elegance of this Chardonnay – dominated blend from Reims Champagne House Castelnau whose cellar master is Elisabeth Sarcelet. Due to the relative high proportion of Chardonnay it comes on like a blanc de blancs with a very floral nose. But further complexity is revealed with herbal qualities, ginger and apricots. The palate has a fine mousse with a rich creamy texture and long finish."
