During the 1790s, Spanish missionaries recognized the rare soils and favourable climate of the Santa Lucia Highlands of Monterey and planted grapevines there. Yet nearly two hundred years later when HFW founder Nicolaus (Nicky) Hahn and his wife Gaby first purchased land in the Highlands, cattle, sheep and horses ranged over the hills. Vineyards were a secondary concern.
Nicky immediately saw that the land he’d purchased was destined for greater things than grazing stock. He wasted no time. In 1980, the Hahn’s released their first wine from SLH. A mere eight years later, Nicky led the charge to establish SLH as an American Viticultural Area, a dream he saw realized in 1991.
Today, Hahn Family Wines, now run by Nicky and Gaby’s son Philip, owns and sustainably farms 650 acres of estate vineyards in the Santa Lucia Highlands and SLH enjoys worldwide acclaim for the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay made there.
Hahn Winery Signature Series
Known for being supple and accessible the range is sourced from five vineyards in Monterey County and Santa Lucia Highlands. In German ‘Hahn’ means ‘Rooster,’ hence the emblem adorning the Hahn wines.
Named after the velocipede bicycle this wine is far from an uncomfortable ride - it is big, bold, intense and sustainably farmed in Lodi.
Smith & Hook
The first vintage in 1980 was released to high acclaim and these Cabernet Sauvignons from the ranches of Smith and Hook have continued to impress since. The packaging reflects this unique ranch-turned vineyard history and emphasises the quality.
Hahn SLH Estate
Winemaker Paul Clifton eloquently sums these wines up saying ‘they encompass the soil, the climate, and the soul itself of the Santa Lucia Highlands.’ To accentuate the beauty of the wines and vineyards named after Santa Lucia, the patron saint of light, the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir have been given new elegant labels that highlight the importance the AVA has had on the winery.
Located in Santa Lucia Highlands these vineyards produce premium estate bottled Pinot Noir that focus on top vineyard practices and expert winemaking.
